Let me introduce myself as an Indian by birth who has studied, lived and woked out side of India and returned back after a 5 year stint abroad. I left India after a professional qualification and I wanted to study more and most importantly learn more about the world. Enrolled in a foreign University in Canada i got fantasctic experience having worked with people from all over the world. Thereafter got a job in Europe and was lucky enough to get managerial experience. I would consider myself to be well travelled if you compare with an average Indian.
After spending about 5 years abroad I returned back to India under social pressure from family and friends to learn more about India and its values and traditions. To start with a job in place known as Mumbai, Maharashtra India was an experience of lifetime.
There is no second thought to the fact that India is growing, perhaps one of the fastest growing countries in the world. The pace of growth is so fast that whosover is slow gets crushed with the stampede. So here i started in Mumbai crowded by millions of people. For those who dont know, Mumbai the capital of indian state maharashtra is the most populous city in India, most populous metropolitan area in India, and the eighth most populous city in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million and metropolitan area population of 20.7 million as of 2011.
One can imagine how the life would be for a person who is returning after having lived in switzerland and landing up in Mumbai. By the way I belong the Delhi, the national capital of India. Thats where i was born and brought up and spend majority of my life. In Mumbai I joined a big 4 organization and started working in tax.
My first day in the organization and there was one flat bench/desk on which 10 people were sitting in a row and working on critical tax issues of their respective clients. I was amazed to see how there were sitting squeezing themselves in that small open little area where they were sitting. There was about two feet of space for each person on the desk which was so small that if one were to stretch his arm would bang the other persons face. Got to learn that the rentals were so high in Mumbai that space was a constraint and we needed to fit as many people as possible within that available space. Was a learning for my since India is growing both in terms of numbers and work. People were great just that the person sitting on my left hand side was always busy in discussions with her juniors and there were about 3-4 people arond and the one on my right hand side was always on a speaker phone call with the clients and the team. It was unbelievable thats the kind on environment we are maintaining at professional workplace and thats how we are respecting each others space. Well that is not the end of the story the other person who was sitting right in front of my desk and others on his side of the table they all wanted to conduct discussions on their tables and take calls while on speaker. May be since i was returning from abroad i found it to be so weird and strange. Imagine under such circumstances and conditions I was told to write an article to be published in Indian newspaper on th eimplications of the new law in US on Indian multinationals. as directed to me i were to write the piece of intellectual property rights within 2 days only and had it over to my senior. My spirits were high for want to such level of Intellectual work and oi wrote the complete piece of article with all the analysis and stuff and got to know that it was published by an Indian newspaper under the name of my boss without any mention of my name as an author. This is how the intellectual pro[perty rights has no relevance and meaing in Indian even with the so called multi national culture. By the way this is not the first publication i did i have had books published under my name in India on Indian value added tax and transfer pricing.
How the hell can someone do that abuse to the labour in India. I would rather call myself as an educated professional labout getting abused by the big 4 culture. This could have been unimaginable in the west. No appreciation or acknoledgement even came by for that effort i did under extremely difficult working conditions. Each single day my head used to pain as my mind was not able to digest inhuman working conditions. But thats the way it works in India.
let me mention that my boss was a Gujarati bhai. Mumbai has lots of people from other nearby states to come and work there the majority of them being from Gujarat, the place where the prime minister of India belongs.since there were too many Gujarati's both in my office and at other corporates in Mumbai there were several instances where the complete meeting was held in Gujarati language without they caring about the fact that the rest of the members in the meeting had no background in that regional language. This is a blow to the so called international adaptability we boast of for Indian culture. We dont even care about fellow Indian forget about others.
